About Me

My name is Kathleen Porter, and I have been residing in the Treasure Valley with my Boise native husband, Brian, and our six children since 2007. After buying our home in 2016, we began to transform our West Boise backyard into an edible landscape,which now includes a variety of stone fruit trees, berries, grapes and multiple garden beds.

Growing in the high desert can be challenging, but I have learned by experience that our climate is perfect for growing a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

Boise Backyard Gardens was founded in 2023 with a simple mission: to educate and empower our community by helping individuals grow their own food by providing high quality plant starts from our nursery and helpful, personalized consultations and garden installations.

It's a family affair!

The Fam

I’m also a mother to 6 great kids ages 15-5, whom I homeschool. Outside of gardening, our hobbies include hiking as a family, visiting the “off the beaten path” gems of Idaho, soaking in hot springs, and hosting dinners with friends and family.

Everyone pitches in when it's growing season! You will find us filling trays with dirt to plant seeds, watering, moving trays of seedlings, and setting up for Farmer's Markets or neighborhood sales most Saturdays.
